Bring the benefits of clean fuel two-stroke engines to power generation and industrial applications

WinGD two-stroke gensets offer a clean fuel-ready solution for land-based power generation and industrial uses, with significant benefits over gas turbines and four-stroke engines in emissions, capex and cost of energy production.

WinGD engines have powered land-based applications for decades, with a global installed base of more than 800,000MW.  Many original Sulzer engines still power remote power plants, with some accumulating more than 200,000 reliable running hours to date.

As utilities and industrial operators seek to meet decarbonisation and renewable energy targets, WinGD’s gensets for ammonia, methanol and LNG deploy the only production-ready two-stroke engines with clean fuel capability – combining low capex, emissions and levelized cost of electricity with high reliability to outperform genset configurations based on gas turbines and medium-speed engines.

The two-stroke genset advantage

With a modular power plant approach and efficiency of 49% to 53% across engine loads ranging from 20% to 100%, WinGD two-stroke gensets deliver a proven and reliable technology solution for fuelflexible power plants.

Two-stroke engine based gensets offer unmatched reliability and efficiency, crucial for maintaining grid stability and providing secure energy solutions. Alternate fuel power plants are dispatchable at any time and they can quickly adjust the load profile to balance demand with capacity. These capabilities, combined with the inherent variability and non-dispatchability of renewable energy sources, will drive increasing market growth and demand for fuel flexible power plants.

In close cooperation with leading engineering, procurement and construction partners, WinGD has developed a low opex, modular power plant solution tailored for the evolving power generation market.

Clean-fuel gensets for decarbonised electricity production

Methanol and ammonia fuelled gensets provide an optimal solution for mines, mills and island power stations seeking to achieve the lowest cost of electricity with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions.

WinGD’s X-DF-A ammonia-fuelled and X-DF-M methanol-fuelled low-speed engines are designed for use with potentially zero-carbon or carbon-neutral fuels, with biodiesel as a reserve fuel.

Natural gas-fired power plants are a viable option today given the widespread, global availability of the LNG including bio- and synthetic-LNG. WinGD’s X-DF genset for LNG delivers superior efficiency at partial loads, enhancing operational flexibility while minimizing both operational costs and environmental impact.

All X-DF, X-DF-A and X-DF-M gensets deliver the following advantages:

  • High efficiency across all loads
  • High electric inertia
  • Optimal support to stabilising renewable grid systems
  • No power derating from ambient conditions
  • No performance degradation over time
  • Low opex and maintenance costs
  • Low greenhouse gas and air pollution emissions
  • Possibility to burn biodiesel fuel as back up fuel
